Policing in America
“A good person does the right thing, even when no one is looking” – Cesar Gerrard
The American history of crime has been extremely influential on the way the United states is run today.
The original concept of Law Enforcement was introduced and replicated from the ideas of Sir Robert Peel. In 1829 Peel enforced the worlds first MODERN police force in London, England. The first police department in the United States was established in 1844 in the state of New York. They were the first to have both day and night shifts of officers. In 1902, the IACP (International association of chiefs of police) formed. In 1920 the great prohibition occurred. This was an act that prohibited all sales, manufacturing and consumption of alcohol. In 1931 the Wickersham commission reported that the prohibition was unenforceable and actually carried great potential for police corruption. The act was repealed in 1933.
In 1969 the LEAA (Law Enforcement Assistance Administration) was formed. This was the association that helped fund the law enforcement agencies. The current supporters for criminal justice research are: The NIJ (National institution of justice), BJS (Bureau of justice statistics). OJP (Office of Justice) and the NCJRS (National criminal justice reference services).
