Often times, there are debates surrounding controversial environmental issues, such as global warming, deforestation and nuclear power. But then, there is little or no public debate on the impact of plastic bags on the environment. Plastic bags kill tens of thousands of animals every year. In the marine environment plastic bag litter is lethal, killing tens of thousands of birds, whales, seals and turtles every year as they often mistake plastic bags for food such as jellyfish (planetark, 2015). Various experts estimate that up to a million birds and 100,000 marine mammals are killed each year from plastic debris including bags (One Green Planet, 2015). It is estimated that between 500 billion and one trillion plastic bags are used worldwide each year ( One Green Planet, 2015). This means that plastic bags is serious environmental issue. Given this, we as sustainability leaders should start to think of a way to trigger some public debate on this issue. Sustainability is about…

The most common effects of dumping plastics into the ocean are entanglement and ingestion. There are six main types of ocean pollution happening: oil, sewage, air pollution, agricultural runoff, sunscreen (lesser known), and the most common type being dumping. Ocean dumping consists of dumping garbage, sewage, waste chemicals, and construction debris into the ocean. Entanglement is a large factor in the deaths of marine animals and is also the most common. Entanglement “kills through drowning, strangulation, dragging, and reduction of feeding efficiency” (Moore, 132). The most common types of marine debri that cause this are fishing gear, balloons, and plastic bags, because they are easily wrapped around the marine animals necks and feet.…

Of the 32 million tons of plastic produced annually, only 9% of plastics are recycled globally. The question then becomes, where does all this plastic end up? The answer is our oceans. The United Nations has noted that there is an estimated 50,000 pieces of plastic in every square mile of the ocean (United Nations). Charles Moore first discovered plastic pollution in the ocean in 1997. Unlike the commonly believed fully covered, island-looking garbage patch that people thing of when referring to a ocean gyre, Moore states that while standing on his boat there was not a moment where he could not see a man-mad object floating somewhere in the water. Since Moore’s discovery trash pollution has continued to escalate. The more plastic that is produced, the more plastic that ends up in our oceans.…

The paper presents a systematic investigation of the dielectric charging and discharging process in silicon nitride thin films for RF-MEMS capacitive switches. The SiN films were deposited with high frequency (HF) and low frequency (LF) PECVD method and with different thicknesses. Metal–Insulator–Metal capacitors have been chosen as test structures while the Charge/Discharge Current Transient method has been used to monitor the current transients. The investigation reveals that in LF material the stored charge increases with the film thickness while in HF one it is not affected by the film thickness. The dependence of stored charge on electric field intensity was found to follow a Poole–Frenkel like law. Finally, both the relaxation time and the stored charge were found to increase with the electric field intensity. Ó 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.…

Today, Plastic that is thrown into the sea floats on the surface and can remain so for 400 years (Amaral).
