SST 242: PRINCIPLES OF SEED PRODUCTION
Lecture Two
Title: Vegetative Propagation
Introduction
Man has propagated plant material almost as long as he has cultivated the land to produce food. For a long time, plant material was propagated mainly by using the seeds of existing plants. Better methods were discovered over time, methods that allowed the farmer to retain the desirable qualities of the plant material, while eliminating some of the less desirable qualities. Through these methods, the farmer was also able to eliminate the variations between plants of the same cultivar and produce more consistently. Today, farmers buy their plant material consisting of seed and seedlings from commercial seed companies or nurseries. The farmer is able to obtain plant material of a wide variety of cultivars, and that has qualities most suited to his specific environment.
Definition: Plant propagation refers to the multiplication of plant material of a specific cultivar, variety, breeding line or strain that possesses desirable characteristics, (such as fruit shape and internal quality) in such a way that more daughter plants are obtained from the mother plant.
There are two methods of plant propagation: •Sexual(seed) -entails the recombination of genetic material, resulting in progeny that differ from each other and from their parents.
•Asexual (also called vegetative reproduction because it simply involves the growth of parts which eventually become detached to form new plants. Since the new parts are produced by ordinary cell division (mitosis), they are direct copies of the original, with no input from another individual as in sexual reproduction) - progeny are genetic copies of the parent plant (clones).

Advantages of Sexual Propagation :-
1) This is very simple and easy method of propagation. e Seeds are mass produced. Plants with fine seed such as Eucalyptus spp. have from 100 to 1000 plus seeds per gram. This makes seed a relatively

All organisms need to reproduce for the continuation of their species. Otherwise, that species would die off. Just like animals, plants are characterized by sexual reproduction, with new organisms being formed from the union of sex cells. While it cannot be said that plants have separate sexes in the same way that animals do, they do form gametes just like animals. Two sperm cells are involved in the fertilization process with plants; one sperm cell combines with the egg cell and the other becomes the seed. In the process of fertilization with animals only one sperm fertilizes the female egg and it occurs in the fallopian tube of the female reproductive tract. Life for a new plant begins when it germinates from the seed. Part of the maturation occurs while in the embryonic stage, and the remainder occurs after birth and germination. Life for an animal begins when exiting the mother's womb or from an egg. In both cases, birth is experienced; however, with plants the process is called mitosis and with animals it is called meiosis. In plants gametes are not produced directly, they have an extra step in which meiosis produces spores.…

Asexual Propagation is the process of using plant materials such as the stems, leaves, and roots to multiply the number of plants. These plants eventually grow to be a brand new plant that is genetically identical to the parent plant it came from. In several types of plants, asexual propagation is the fastest means of new plant growth. Asexual propagation is also a good way to maintain a plant species because they are genetically identical. In this process, adventitious roots are seen in the growing cycle. Adventitious roots are those that grow form parts of the plant that they normally would not grow from. The cuttings must do this in order to form a completely new plant. There are multiple methods of asexual propagation; some include cuttings, layering, division, and budding/grafting. This experiment is designed to look into the method of using cuttings for asexual propagation and the success of the plant parts. As this experiment goes on more herbaceous and succulent plants will root quicker than woody plants.…

Sexual reproduction carries considerably more risk. It involves the combining of genetic information from to individuals. The meeting of the special sex cells (gametes), which carry this information is by no means certain and arranging for them to meet often carries an element of risk, for animals at least. But the great advantage of sexual reproduction is that it introduces variety, which is of great value when conditions are not stable. Variety increases the chance of survival because it provides the opportunity to evolve and take advantage of new conditions and surroundings. One way of sexual reproduction is fertilization, which may take place outside the body (external fertilization) or inside the body (internal…
