Plagiarism
My personal definition of plagiarism would be the act of intentionally or accidentally taking an individual’s ideas or words and presenting them as one’s own. It is also stealing of ideas or words from someone else and making them appear as one’s own. In this case, the author of the original words or ideas is denied his due credit for the words or ideas. Simply, I may also define plagiarism as the basic act of copying and pasting a text from any source and presenting in one’s work without indicating that the text was copied or from where it was copied. Personally, I think plagiarism is all about denying the author of an original work the credit for his work. It’s making use of other people’s works or ideas either in language or writing and failing to recognize the fact that the writer borrowed them from another person. It’s also a form of cheating with the intention of not recognizing the authors of the original works or ideas and is used to mislead the reader. In an academic scenario, plagiarism amounts to cheating which can be met with grave consequences. The work copied may be a quote or exact words in a sentence where the author of such words or quotes is not provided. It may also extend to cover copying another student’s work and attempting to present it as one’s own. The three different forms of plagiarism discussed here are outright copying, patchwork plagiarism I and incorrect paraphrase plagiarism (UEFAP 1). They are well illustrated hypothetically using the following example.
