Thesis: For years, I dreaded going to the Eagle Heights Community Center, a common gathering place for the Rwandan community in Madison, however after traveling to Rwanda, I realized the importance of gathering with family and friends and sharing our culture, food and customs with one another.
“But mom, do I have to go?” I yelled half way across the hallway. With no response, I approached her bedroom door and pleaded once again, “Mooommmm, do I have to go?” Poking her head through the door, a silent piercing expression answered my question, “Hurry up and get dressed” my mother yelped as she slammed the door in my face, “We’re leaving in ten minutes!” Crushed, I turned my back away from the wooden door and dragged my feet back toward my bedroom. Defeated, I squeezed myself into my light blue Rwandan gown, uniquely decorated with stitched sparkling circular sequences of pink and yellow that glistened around my hips and arms, and topped it with a matching sparkling head dressed that rapped firmly around my head. Staring blankly into my reflection, I delicately rosed my cheeks, painted my eyelids a matching pink and glossed my chapped lips a sharp red, and once finished, returned to my mothers now open doorway. “You look beautiful” my mother exclaimed, carefully smoothing away the wrinkles in my dress with her hands, “My little Rwandan Princess.” I smiled back at her half heartily, accepting her compliment but dreaded the party.
Shoulders hunched, I staggered close behind my mother into the familiar atmosphere of the commonly rented Eagle Heights Community Center, dimly lit with florescent light, the room held years of stains produced by multiple gatherings on the walls, floors and even ceiling. I stared down at the cream colored tiles, forming cracked diamonds underneath our feet, as I carefully balancing the hot piled dishes of freshly backed cassava, firmly beat ugali and fried battered amadanse, their familiar aroma swelling quickly...
