...Pi has always been an interesting concept to me. A number that is infinitely being calculated seems almost unbelievable. This number has perplexed many for years and years, yet it is such an essential part of many peoples lives. It has become such a popular phenomenon that there is even a day named after it, March 14th (3/14) of every year! It is used to find the area or perimeter of circles, and used in our every day lives. Pi is used in things such as engineering and physics, to the ripples created when a drop of water falls into a puddle, Pi is everywhere. While researching this topic I have found that Pi certainly stretches back to a period long ago. The history of Pi was much more extensive than I originally imagined. I also learned that searching for more numbers in Pi was a major concern for mathematicians in which they put much effort into finding these lost numbers. The use for Pi was also significantly larger than I originally anticipated. I was under the impression that it was used for strictly mathematicians which is entirely not true. This is why Pi is so interesting.

Birth
Archimedes was born in Syracuse, Greece on the island of Sicily in 287 BC. Son of Pheidias, a well-known astronomer, and research showing that Archimedes is thought to be a relative of King Hiero II. King Hiero II questioned a crown made for him. Archimedes studied the crown and discovered the purity of the gold in the crown. Archimedes was sitting in a bath house, watching water running from the crown of King Hiero II, observing the pattern of the water, Archimedes figured the excess of bulk with the introduction of certain alloys can be measured by placing the crown with an equal weight of gold in a separate container filled with water. He was a very smart person, and had invented some useful inventions for human kind for what is still used today. BC. He was a physicist, engineer, inventor, astronomer and a Greek mathematician. Archimedes is one of the greatest math mathematicians of all time. He has been given credit for the invention of the lever even though it was used thousand of years before his time despite the fact that he did not invent it. The Babylonians, Egyptians, Archimedes of Syracuse, Leonardo of Pisa, Francois Viete, Leonhard Euler, Asian mathematicians such as Liu Hiu, Tsu Ch’ung-Chih, Arya Bhatta, Gottfried Leibniz, Isaac Newton, William Jones, John Machin. The ancient Babylonians dates back to the 18th century BCE and reigned in Mesopotamia. The Babylonia, even though it declined drastically in the 17th century, existed until 539 when the Persians consumed Babylonia (Kjeilen, 2009). Archimedes was one of the most known and respected mathematicians of ancient Greece. He was born between the years of 290 and 280 BCE in Syracuse, Sicily which is currently known as Italy. His death took place in Syracuse, Sicily between the years of 212 and 211 BCE. In autumn of 212 or the spring of 211 Syracuse was taken over by Roman General Marcus Claudius Marcellus (Encyclopedia Britannica, n.d). It was during the cities take over that Archimedes was killed. There is rumors about what lead up to a Roman solider killing him. Some historians believe his death was due to Archimedes not willing to give up his mathematical diagrams of mirrors that would burn the Roman ships. The exact years of his birth and death are uncertain, but Greek historian John Tzetes believes he lived to be 75 years old (“Archimedes”, n.d). Archimedes father was named Phidias who was an astronomer. His mother’s name is unknown, but there is belief that Archimedes is related to the Ruler of Syracuse King Hiero II. There are currently not many documents of Archimedes upbringing. In fact there is only one record of his life that was written by his friend Heracleides. Unfortunately this biography was lost.

There are many people who have discovered and proved what pi is. As time goes on people discover more and more of the seemingly random numbers. Four of the people who proved pi are the Liu Hui, Archimedes of Syracuse, James Gregory, and the Bible.
The first proof I will be talking about is Liu Hui’s. Liu Hui was a Chinese mathematician whose method for proving pi was to find the area of a polygon inscribed in a circle. When the number of sides on the inscribed polygon increased, its area became closer to the circumference of a circle and pi. For finding the side length of an inscribed polygon Liu Hui used a simple formula. (13Ma3)
