Physical Education Should Be Mandatory In Illinois To Fight Obesity
Illinois is ranked 25th in America for the highest obesity rate for the U.S. population of all ages (Department of Health, 2011). It is hard to imagine how much lower ranked Illinois would be if they did not have a mandate on physical education in schools. This means that Illinois placed an authoritative command, which is simply the state saying that all schools in the state must have physical education. Even though this mandate is in place, schools are still finding ways around not enforcing the physical part of physical education by exempting students who are in sports and even low activity, extracurricular activities such as the debate team or the speech team. Instead of forcing children take part in physical activity, schools offer those alternatives and cut the “physical” out of the education. Physical education should be required in Illinois to promote physical well being and establish healthy habits early on, so children grow up healthy physical and mentally.
Since physical education has been around since man first walked the earth, there is no reason society should get rid of it now. Physical education is important for the physical well-being of children, but also for the social well-being. The understanding of physical and social well-being is a huge factor for the physical education course. Physical well-being is important for children to be healthy and gain social skills through physical activity. Eliminating physical education from public schools will do nothing but weaken the young generation’s ability to be healthy and socialize with their peers.
There have been many debates of whether physical education should be taught in junior high and high schools.
