e. Before I could take this picture, I first had to measure the depth of the water under the out hang of the cliff to ensure that it was deep enough so that no one would get hurt. I did this by driving the boat over the water and reading the echo sounder installed in our boat. I was also able to take the photo because my brother was willing to jump into the cold water.
f. The circumstances that allowed me to take this photo include; the water being deep enough, nice weather, the cliff being easily accessed by boat, and our boat working properly. Physics in Jumping Off a Cliff
When you jump from a cliff, you accelerate downward because the force of gravity acting upon you. You encounter no resistance from friction with the ground as you would when running or skiing, but you do encounter minor air resistance. Gravity is a powerful force. As you fall, it pulls you toward the earth, or in this case, toward the water at a speed of 9.8 meters per second per second. Because time is a factor in this formula, the longer you fall through space, the faster you go until you encounter free fall.
The height from which you jump affects the speed with which you hit the water. When you reach the water your speed goes from your original speed to zero almost instantaneously. Your speed quickly decelerates once you hit the water because the water applies an upward force on your body which cancels out with your downward acceleration.
