In order to determine Phil’s phonemic awareness skills I need to do several things. I would begin by giving Phil several different short phonemic awareness assessments. In the video Coy stated, “We’re going to do a picture sort where we match beginning sounds” (Teachscape, Inc., 2007a). One of the assessments I would administer to Phil would be a picture assessment. I would have Phil name the picture and they ask him the beginning sound. Coy also stated, “ I’m going to use these sound boxes to train my ear on how to hear the sounds of a word” (Teachscape, Inc., 2007a). The sound boxes help students segment phonemes. I would have Phil do an assessment just like the sound boxes to see if he can hear the sounds in words. After I recorded the results from the assessments I would study the results to determine where Phil struggles.
According to Gunning, “ Phonemic awareness may be learned through interaction with print, through specific training in segmenting and other skills, or through some combination of the two” (2010, p. 167). In order for Phil to be successful in reading he needs to learn to segment and identify phonemes. I believe a good intense program that incorporates phonemic awareness will help with Phil’s struggles. Phil’s instruction would differ depending on how quickly he was able to grasp the concepts.
I would collaborate with my colleagues and principal to develop a plan that would help meet Phil’s needs. I would use Project Read Phonology program to help meet Phil’s needs. Project Read Phonology is an intensive phonemic awareness and phonics program.
With Project Read assessments I will be able to monitor Phil’s’ progress. I would reassess Phil with the initial assessments and compare the results. Observations will also be used in assessing Phil’s progress. [continues]
