Phoenix Jackson emerges in "A Worn Path" as a character who endures; she is the symbol of perseverance, stamina, and life in the face of hardship and death. You can note that her sheer fortitude in making the long journey on foot and alone points to these qualities. She shows stamina because she continues on her journey regardless of the continuous obstacles that tend to be in her path every time she makes the journey. Phoenix Jackson’s determination led her to keep striving on her journey, which was to get her grandsons medicine. Phoenix Jackson was a figure of old age who had flashbacks that reminded her of how people used to be of assistance to her. When Jackson fell in the ditch, she dreamed someone reaching down to help pull her out, but when she reached her hand out there was nothing. In this time in her life she really realizes that she’s forgetting things, even the fact that she was traveling for her grandson’s medicine. She was determined to get the medicine for her grandson because he was sick and for the fact that he couldn’t travel for himself. Even though Jackson had a bad memory, she continued to stay happy even when the nurse gave her the medicine for free. The mothers is constantly ranting that her daughter has the intent of becoming a slut, which creates even more dissension and hostility within the dialogue between the two. Personally it would be more of a monologue because the mother spoke more while the daughter had two sentences to speak. Through the tension, the daughter tries to gain advantage over her mother’s advice by offering objectives to her mother word. What the daughter fails to realize that her mother is that she has learned the hard way and she’s giving her litany of advice for future generations. In the story the daughter is called “girl” because she struggles to find to find her own emerging identity in the shadow of her mother and the shadow of the identity her mother wants her to have.
