I. Introduction
“Philadelphia” was one of the first main stream Hollywood films to acknowledge HIV/AIDS, homosexuality, and homophobia. Andrew Beckett, a gay lawyer with AIDS, is fired from his conservative law firm under the suspicion that he has AIDS and that everyone around him might also contract the HIV/AIDS virus from him. With time waning, Beckett contacts Joe Miller, a homophobic lawyer. At first, Miller did not want to take Beckett’s case, but after seeing Beckett a few times, Miller decides to take on the case. During the court battle, Miller sees that Beckett is no different from anyone else.

1. Why do Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) laws exist? What can employers do to prevent for new laws?
Equal Employment Opportunity laws exist because the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s influenced public attitudes towards members of racial minorities and women.   Equal Employment Opportunity laws exist so it addresses the discrimination based on race, gender, and religion. The idea also spread to include age, pregnancy, and individuals with disabilities. Employers have had to pay significantly for violating Equal Employment Opportunity laws. Which makes the point, employers must be familiar with these laws to ensure that their practices are not discriminatory.
2. If you were one of the owners in the law firm, how would you handle the situation? Would the fear of AIDS affect how you deal with the situation?
If I were one of the owners in the law firm, I would have handled the situation very differently. I would have tried to find out everything there is to know about the disease before making a decision. After finding out as much information as I can, I would share that information with the other owners and have a sit down conference including Andrew Beckett. If I did my research, I would not have a fear of AIDS and it would not affect how I deal with the situation. As a human being, we always have to think that it could... [continues]
