When people are sick and need medicine, who is responsible for making sure they get what they need to recover to full health? Doctors? In part, however, Pharmacists are the ones who do the actual distribution of necessary medication. Pharmacists help hundreds of patients a day by filling their prescriptions, advising them about over the counter medication, and describing to them the side effects brought on by certain medications. This is only a small portion of the vast amount of responsibility that rests on a pharmacist’s shoulders. Pharmacist’s have one of the most important jobs in the medical profession. They have a large amount of responsibility, it takes a lot of education to become one, and there are ways to prepare for this career field as early as high school.
There are many things that a pharmacist is responsible for. Contrary to popular opinion, pharmacists do indeed do more than count pills and mix creams all day. For each and every patient, a pharmacist must check the person’s respective medical background (Arnes). This is one of a pharmacist’s main objectives. The point of this is to ensure that the patients were not falsely prescribed a medication that conflicts with their allergies, or preexisting conditions. This is very important and can save lives. Another responsibility a pharmacist has, aside from the traditional role of counting pills, is to consult with consumers about which over-the-counter drug is appropriate for their respective condition or illness. This helps treat people with less severe illnesses, however it is still important. On top of that, pharmacists, who own their own pharmacies, have to maintain the finances. This is often tedious and requires a lot of hours outside of work (Arnes). In addition to maintaining the financial aspect of the pharmacy, pharmacists often are required to research regulations on prescriptions and other medications that are constantly being updated.
