1.1 Introduction

Petrochemicals play an important role in the modern world: they are essential for the production of a diverse set of products, such as synthetic fibbers and rubbers, plastics and resins, solvents and paints, explosives, and many more. In Singapore, the petrochemical industry is one of the fastest growing industries, fuelled by rapid economic development in the East Asia. It has strong linkages with the domestic economy, especially with the petroleum refining industry.

Petrochemical Corporation of Singapore started on 10 August 1997 and has been the only one upstream companies of Singapore Petrochemical Complex since then.

2.1.1 Increasing in the demand for petrochemical product

The increase in the demand for petrochemical products in this year is due to the rising and demand for consumer goods such as computers, cars and cell phones in Asia. The plastics and plastic products are used in the automotive, construction and packaging related industries. It is predicted that the economy growth will drive to the big demand for those products , so it rises the demand for petrochemical products .

2.1.2 Lesser price elasticity

Although, the oil price has increased to $US77 per barrel .it does not stop the global growth of oil-related industries including petrochemical industry. In the last year 2006 , the price of petrochemical products turned out double more than oil prices , it means that one dollar increase in the oil prices leads to two dollars increase in petrochemical products prices .
