Eggplant, Solanum melongena L., is a popular vegetable crop grown in the subtropics and tropics. It is called brinjal in India and auberginein Europe. The name "eggplant" derives from the shape of the fruit of some varieties, which are white and shaped similarly to chicken eggs.

The fruits of eggplant come in a wide array of shapes and colors. Select a variety that is most suitable to your market. Proper seed selection and treatment and planting in well drained soil reduce seed rot and damping-off (Chen; Li; Kalb, 2001). 

Row or fine mesh covers also help reduce pest attack. However, during the reproductive stage, hand-pollination of flowers is necessary (Lindgren, 1982).
