Topic: Falling Whistles Organization
Specific Purpose: To persuade people to buy a whistle from falling whistles and become a whistle blower for peace. I. Attention Step
a. Attention Getter: Busco, Bahati, Serungendo, Claude, and Sadiki. i. These were the names of five boys who were imprisoned in a military encampment named Titu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. These boys along with hundreds of others, all under the age of 15, were being forced to fight in a war that they were only born into. The older ones were trained to fight with guns. Those too small and weak to hold a gun were given whistles and placed in the frontlines of war to act as an alarm and startle the enemy and act as a shield for the first round of bullets. After being rescued from the rebel army they thought they were going to get refuge from the abuse but they were wrong. The National Army was no different. ii. In 2008 Sean Carasso had traveled to Africa with the intent of making a change in people’s lives. Little did he know that he would start a revolution that would seek an end to the world’s deadliest war since WWII. On a trip to track down the rebel leader Nkunda Sean had found his way to these five boys who had just escaped from both the rebel army and the National Army. iii. With the simple act of sharing their stories, they changed each other’s lives. This meeting with the five boys would mark the start of the Falling Whistles revolution. b. Credibility Statement: When I had first heard of this problem in 2009 I set a whole day aside dedicated to finding out what I could do to help all these problems and how I could make a difference. This is when I found the Falling Whistles website. Since that day I have kept myself informed on this issue and what I could do to help stop the terror that the Congolese face. c.
