Persuasive Essay on Smoking
“Smoking kills. If you're killed, you've lost a very important part of your life”. –Brooke Shields. Many people are already aware of the fact that smoking harms their body. Why do people continue to smoke then? Sometimes people have an addiction, or are not aware of the things that it can do to their body. Other times, they do not believe what people say about smoking, or do not think that these effects will happen to them. There are a lot of reasons why someone should not smoke. Some of them are that smoking affects your health, the money spent on cigarettes and not respecting the people around someone when they smoke.
The first reason why someone should not smoke is that smoking affects your health. If you smoke, your physical condition will be negatively affected and your lungs will be damaged. Therefore, it will be very difficult for you to succeed in sports or even sometimes simple activities like walking up the stairs or doing your day to day activities. Also, smoking produces lethal diseases like cancer and reduces the length and quality of your life. According to statistics, each cigarette is seven minutes of your life taken away. Effects of smoking may not be aware to someone when they start to smoke, but eventually in life they will wish that they had quit.
The second reason why someone should not smoke is because of all the money that they will spend on it, even if they do not have the money to spend. Maybe in some positions, someone only decides to smoke when someone offers them a cigarette, but there will be a day when they will feel the need of a cigarette. By this time, they will pay whatever to smoke, and each time they will smoke more because of their addiction. Therefore, they will spend more money. All of the money they would spend on cigarettes could have been spent in something better, don’t you think? The amount of money that some people spend on cigarettes could pay for their gas for the week, or even maybe the month! People who do not have a lot of money even make sure that they have enough to buy cigarettes, which starts to be a big problem.
The last reason why someone should not smoke is out of respect for the people around them. When they smoke, not only are they harming themselves, but they are also harming all of the people that may be around them. People tend to be selfish and smoke around others who do not smoke. It is said that second hand smoke is even worse than smoking normally, so why would anyone smoke in front of others who do not want this issue? Not only this, but the smell of cigarettes is not a pleasant smell and most people do not like to smell it. If someone was doing something in front of you that you did not want to be a part of, how would that make you feel?
Even though I only talked about some reasons of why people shouldn’t smoke, there are many more reasons and common sense issues as to why an individual should not smoke. Adding on to what I have talked about, people should really think about themselves and their self worth. Think also about all the people who love you, like your family who doesn’t want to see you suffering or sick. Smoking can lead to a very sad and uncomfortable death or even sickness and it is just not worth the pleasure of a cigarette for that matter. If someone decides to continue smoking, they really should look at the consequences and how worthless it is and the money that they could be saving if they quit this horrible habit. If someone were to decide to stop smoking, they would get a lot of praise and congratulations! Something to really keep in mind is that “If you can dream it, you can do it”.
