Persuasive Public Speaking Outline
A. Attention Getter:
During the summer of 2012 a woman name Jessica Cowan has been charged with the drunken driving murder of a 5 year old girl. The little girl was crossing the street hand in hand with her mother and sister when the woman ran the red light and hit her at a crosswalk in Santa Ana, California. Jessica Cowan is accused of trying to flee the scene but a witness prevented her from leaving. She is now facing 15 years to life in prison.
B. Motive to Listen:
Drunk driving is responsible for more deaths over the holidays than at any time of the year. On New Year’s Day of 2008, 468 people in the U.S. were killed in car accidents. Alcohol-impaired driving contributed to 40 percent of them. According to MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) drunk driving remains a serious threat in Minnesota. Other states in the U.S. have experienced a drop in drunk driving over the past year but in Minnesota it has increased.
C. Speaker Credibility:
I’m almost always driving. Between school and work I drive at all times. I don’t want to have to worry about drunk drivers on the road especially when I have to work a closing shift at my job which usually ends at 1 or 2am. Most drunk drivers are driving at night on their way home from a party or social event.
D. Thesis & Signposting:
Drunk driving is still a major problem today and tonight I will discuss the problems, consequences, and possible solutions.
II. Need Step
A. Statement of Need:
People who are caught drunk driving should lose their license for a year and also be put on probation. Although taking they’re license won’t really stop them from driving jail time or probation can be a wake up call. I think this is a great way to get them off the road because if they do it once there’s no doubt that they won’t do it again.
