My name is Nguyen Hong Van, 22 years of age. I was born in a medium – sized family in Quang Ninh province of Vietnam. I live in a small bungalow which is well subdivided into rooms enough to provide my family members with pristine environment to live and work. My father is an officer who is workaholic and always finds his work tempting. My mother is a household women who can spent hours even a whole day cooking big meals for her beloved family. My mother is also a big thumb, she has gardening passion in her blood and may “genetically” transmit it to her daughter – my sister who is now working for a big telecommunication group in Hanoi.

I finished high school when I was 19 and joint college, majoring in English and Business. Upon college graduation in late 2010, I headed for NEWTATCO – a Group of Updated Technology Application and Tourism, working in an office branch of other six assistants in term of cross – cultural communication and international relations research. I am really captivated by such sort of occupation and never mind working really late whenever workload or even weekend days. Our colleagues at work are knowledable and supportive that is why I always feel in debt to them for whatever extra worthwhile knowledge and skills that I have obtained form them.

Since schooling, I have been interested by subjects concerning with the practical issues of language: acquisition of foreign languages, cross-cultural communication, maintenance of languages, and assessment and treatment of language difficulties. Studying Applied Linguistics could provide me with critical, practical and theoretical knowledge relevant to careers in foreign language education, whether TESOL or any other social communication and speech.

As far as I was fully concerned, studying linguistics of a popular foreign language, specially English would form my initial background and would be requisite, helping me to approach my such a long time

When I was eleven years old I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. I had a hard time coping with the changes in my mood. Part of my healing process consisted of trying many different medications, therapies, and developing the desire to heal. During this time, friends I had for many years pushed me away, and although I felt alone and confused at times, I came out thriving. Bipolar Disorder is a mood disorder thought to be caused by chemical imbalances in the brain that can result in extreme swings in mood—from manic highs to depressive lows. To be diagnosed with bipolar disorder, you must have experienced a high period (mania). Bipolar mania is described as an “extreme high,” or feeling unusually great. Most people with bipolar disorder when ill or when symptomatic experience more lows than highs. Unfortunately, the lows I experienced were so extreme that the friends I thought would be by my side through anything chose to follow other kids and use my disorder to bully me creating deeper depression. Initially, I felt stigmatized by my diagnosis. Most people I encountered either didn’t know what bipolar was or how to interact with someone suffering with the disorder. Teachers, peers, and family members had a hard time knowing what to say or how to act around me. I started to feel like I was no longer my own person but just one big disaster and my mood swings became even more extreme as a result. Eventually, I grew tired of feeling sorry for myself and began my quest for the right medication, vitamins, nutrition, psychological and spiritual health and wellbeing. I found my inner strength and courage. I put my energy into school, new friendships and family and started…

A friend recently told me “Don’t let the things you can’t control, control you”. I realized how much this small piece of advice relates to my life as an African American woman. I can’t control the fact that I don’t live with- or even know- my father. I can’t control how society perceives people of color. But I control what I do. I have discovered that I embody the ability to beat the odds given to a black, fatherless girl. I can be who I want to be with hard work and determination.…

I am ready to start a new chapter in my life and to take the next step to becoming a Registered Nurse. I have worked for the NHS for over 3 years now, and have been a Health Care Assistant for 16 months. Prior to this I worked as an Ambulance Care Assistant for East Midlands Ambulance Service. I have had experience in patient care from washing, bathing, monitoring vital signs, and working both in the community and in a hospital setting. Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team has helped me effectively care for my patients and developed my communication skills in working with other NHS professionals. One of the most satisfying parts of my job now, and in my previous role is the direct patient contact. Developing trusting relationships and listening to them is very rewarding and helps me to get to know my patients, show empathy and maintain their dignity. I am used to shift working, working 7 days a week with various shift patterns, so this side of the role will not faze me.…

I was asked to winter formal my freshman year of high school by the Air Force JROTC commander who just happened to be a senior. Having the head-person in charge even talk to me at all was a big deal back then. I still don’t know how it happened, but with a bit of dumb luck and a lot of late nights out, we started dating. Danail and I were on top of the world. There was nothing we couldn’t accomplish if we set our minds to it, and so we did. We were always out on adventures. You could catch us hiking, backpacking, or just hanging out with friends, but we always had huge smiles on our faces. Slowly getting to know each other better, and planning our futures together, one important detail I found out is that during her sophomore year of high school she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She was in remission, but at the expense of having to endure extensive treatments of chemotherapy and radiation. Halfway through my sophomore year (we were still dating) she was re-diagnosed with malignant tumors in her abdomen. She went through several hospitals and even more treatment plans, keeping her optimism high and still living to love life. Fast forward to this last summer when at 2am on June 12th, 2012 at the Cancer Treatment Center of America in Arizona, our last hope, Danail Lynn Frey took her last breath. She meant more to me than I could ever comprehend at the time, and my life was suddenly derailed in an instant.…
