A Rite of Passage (A personal Narrative)
Crying was my privilege! I knew that I had been a sniveler since I attended kindergarten. I hated being separated from my mother. The separation made me feel insecure and uncomfortable, just like an abandoned child. Therefore, I never stopped crying if I could not see my mother round me. For my weird behavior, my mum used to laugh at me.
The most impressive moment occurred when I was five years old. One day after school, my mother brought me to the shopping mall and bought me some Japanese snacks. She mentioned that she wanted to buy a birthday cake for her father, but I wasn’t listening. What I was focusing on was the snack. It was a bag of wasabi dried fish. I loved its smell greatly! I fumbled for the wasabi dry fish from my overstuffed bag and kept chewing what was already inside my mouth.
Maybe I was paying too much attention guzzling my delicacies. I just wandered as I liked, not following my mother closely. Suddenly I realized that mum wasn’t right beside me! I faltered with my bag of dry fish, start to seek my mum’s traces. In ten minutes, I burst into sobs .I put some dry fish in my mouth and tried to calm myself down, but it was futile.
Some accommodating aunties came to me and asked if I was lost. Panic! I didn’t know how to reply. Therefore, I burst into tears under this unspoken pressure. As I sobbed, my eyes were red and puffed. I kept lisping my words: “Mum, mum! Where are you? “I could barely say a full sentence. At that time, I could only stammer to those people who were trying to help me.
Finally, one auntie took me to the reception. A young man patted me and calmed me down. He said that all I had to do was to wait for my mother, and then she could buy me more snacks that I liked! I fully believed that what he was saying was true. So I wiped the tears away and regained my smile.
