Educate people about our own prejudice that is hurting us and the society in which we live in. It is a shame that in this century people are still ignorant about certain issues such as: religion, sexual orientation, race and so on. Last month I met a man whom while conversing he introduced a topic about handicap. He stated it is easier for a man to get involve with a handicap woman then it is for a woman to accept a man with handicap. He went on and on about his belief; but when I told him that I was indeed engaged to a man that was totally blind. He then asked me what was wrong with me, was I that desperate? This was the assumption of many people, to be honest I think even my fiancé had his own prejudice going on within himself. He thought I was after his money and fame.
No matter how open minded we claim to be we all have formed some kind of prejudice belief. When my son was a youngster I decided that he will not go to school in the area in which we lived in. we lived in the projects in the Bronx in a mix income neighborhood; yet the children from the projects were zoned for another school. The system failed the kids in my area; there were not enough programs and resources were available for the low income areas. Nevertheless they did have free meals for the kids during break time such as summer break. These schools produced more drop out and the kids behaviors were ignored or pushed to the extreme, I knew of kids who graduated and they did not know how to read, some parents paid for tutoring while others did not. My personal goal with this degree is to use the knowledge acquired in the classes to educate young people, adult and children; thus indeed the differences exist, however we must look beyond them and embrace the individual rather than the handicap, the race, social or economical status.
