Secrets of the Lavish City: Dubai
What defines a great city? The ability to overcome a poor and unstable economy? Tourist attractions? Beautiful scenery? Wealth? The lavish city of Dubai exhibits all of these traits; however, this city possesses many unattractive and unpublicized traits as well. This once poor and deprived city is now one of the world’s greatest and most beautiful tourist attractions, but this city’s appealing scenery does not begin to explain the horrors deep within the city’s walls. Many tourists and visitors only see the extravagant buildings and well-designed malls, but they do not experience the secret terrors that lie behind their architectural beauty. While Dubai is portrayed as a great, beautiful, and market-rich city, it ultimately fails to take care of its people by exploiting its labor force, ignoring sex trafficking, and mistreating the environment.

Dubai’s labor force represents the number one challenge this city faces. Workers are over worked, under paid, and degraded. Ninety five percent of the workers are foreigners who are getting Visas from their employers; therefore, they feel in debt to them according to Allen Faulkner (par. 5). Once in Dubai these men cannot change jobs because they are on Visas so they are trapped in these horrible work conditions. Twelve-hour work shifts with $5 a day is the wage earned by these workers, some even less (“Dubai-Jobs” par. 26). Allen Faulkner reported that work conditions are unsafe, resulting in an average of nine hundred deaths a year, all go unreported to authorities (par. 9). The owners just ship the bodies back to their home countries like nothing happened (par.9). Dubai’s quality of life for these low-paid workers is deplorable, because these immigrants aren’t the millionaire men who prosper from Dubai’s richness.
