Osmosis Egg Lab
I. Introduction
The reason for doing this lab was to see the process of osmosis. Osmosis is diffusion from a high concretion to a low concentration across a cell membrane. The cell membrane was represented by an egg without a shell.
II. Hypothesis
The egg that will placed in the distilled water will swell like a balloon. This is because distilled water is a hypotonic solution which makes water go in a cell (the egg without a shell) and make it swell.
The egg that will placed in the syrup will shrivel up and look a raisin a little. This is because syrup is a hypertonic solution which makes water go out of a cell (the egg without a shell) and make it shrivel up.
III. Materials
• The eggs without a shell
• Foam cups
• Distilled water
• Pancake syrup
• Electronic scales
• Plastic Spoons
IV. Procedures
1. Obtain eggs from instructor.
2. Place eggs in Styrofoam cups filled with vinegar. Make sure eggs are completely covered by vinegar.
3. Let sit for 1-2 days.
4. Carefully rub the remaining residue of the shell off the eggs. (Be careful: the eggs will break easily)
5. Record the mass of the eggs. (Use the following process for determining mass)
Place Styrofoam cup on scale. Zero Scale.
Place eggs in Styrofoam cup. Record its mass. (One at a time)
6. Fill another Styrofoam cup full of water and another with syrup.
7. Place an egg in each cup of different solutions.
8. Let sit for three days.
9. Determine mass of each egg after the three days.
10. Make observations as well.
The independent variable in this experiment was the different solution the eggs were in.
The dependent variable in this experiment was the egg without a shell.
V. Data
Data After sitting in the syrup for three days the mass changed from 76.6 to 43.7. The egg in the syrup had a hard yoke, the syrup was really watery now, and the egg’s skin turned brown. See Graph 1. After sitting in the Distilled water for three days the mass changed from 83.7 to 94.8. The

The egg swelled in the vinegar because of diffusion. The vinegar moved into the egg which caused the egg to swell, as the egg was in a hypertonic solution. The egg that was placed into the distilled water swelled only slightly as the concentration of solvent in the egg was lower…

This is a really cool science project. I got most of my information from sciencehound.com. I learned a lot about density and buoyancy. You can increase the density of water by adding salt. Eggs float at different levels in water depending on how much salt is added. If no salt is added, the egg just sinks to the bottom. It’s almost like doing a magic…

In order to complete this experiment, one of the most important things you need to know how to do is how to take the outer “shell” layer off of the egg. The egg shells contain an element known as calcium carbonate. This element can be turned into carbon dioxide when combined with acetic acid. You can find acetic acid in vinegar. {Guenther, Leanne. “Soft Shelled Eggs.” Kidzone Science, Kidzone Science, 1998, www.kidzone.ws/science/egg.htm.}…

LITERATURE: The acids in the vinegar make the shell deteriorate. Eggs contain "calcium carbonate"(this is what makes it hard), and vinegar is an acid. When they both combine a chemical reaction takes place, and carbon dioxide is released. This is what bubbles are made of. The vinegar makes the egg soft because it takes all the carbon out. Since the egg shell is made out of "calcium carbonate" and is "eaten" up by the acidic vinegar. It leaves behind the inner membrane and gives it the rubbery effect.…

This lab helps further our understanding of essential principles behind diffusion and osmosis. Permeability, concentration gradients, plasmolysis, water potential, and equilibrium were also concepts that were delved into in this lab. Understanding how diffusion and osmosis works is essential to understanding biology. Each time a cell has something move into or out of it, some sort of principle studied in this lab is occurring. Diffusion, osmosis, and passive and active transport are all fundamental concepts of Biology. This lab simulated osmosis in the cell. In this case, we used dialysis tubing to simulate the semi-permeable membrane of an animal cell.…

    Osmosis Lab Report

The reason of this experiment was to identify the properties and effects of osmosis. Osmosis can be defined as the diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane. (Miller/Levine) Osmosis occurs when there is an area of higher and lower concentration. Osmosis is a type of diffusion. Diffusion is when molecules move from an area of higher concentration to an area of higher concentration. The three types of concentrations are hypotonic, hypertonic, and isotonic. When in comparison to another solution, a hypertonic solution has a lower concentration, a hypertonic solution has a higher concentration, and an isotonic is when the two solutions have an equal concentration. The experiment tested the relationship between the concentration of an egg and solutions of different concentrations. The hypothesis is that an egg placed in distilled water will gain mass while an egg placed in syrup would lose mass.…

    Egg Lab Report

An egg is a model of a human because the egg has a cell membrane like humans do inside and outside of the body that let things pass through like water. We can use eggs to study the effect of changes in the external environment on the internal environment by having harsh environments like putting the egg in only alcohol and see what happens to the inside of the egg. Diffusion is the movement of a substance down its concentration gradient from a more to a less concentrated area. Meaning if there was more oxygen on one side of the membrane and the membrane was permeable to oxygen, the oxygen would pass through to the side of less oxygen. Osmosis is the movement of water across a selectively permeable membrane. Diffusion and osmosis is important for organisms because our nutrients, oxygen, and etc., need diffusion to go through compartments. I predicted that the more the concentrated the alcohol solution was the mass would increase because I thought the membrane would let alcohol through which would cause the egg to expand.…

Since the egg’s density is higher than the density of freshwater the egg will sink. Density is mass per unit volume, which means a measure of how much mater is in a certain volume. If you add enough salt the egg will float again. The salt makes the water denser because the salt creates more mass and some what keeps the volume at the same level. When enough salt is add that means that the water has a higher density level than the egg. The ability of making something…

Did you know that vinegar was the main source of making the egg change to where it could be able to bounce? The vinegar reacts with the calcium that is on the shell and then makes the egg able to bounce. The inside of the egg still stays the same. If you do not boil the egg the yolk is still runny, if you end up busting the egg yolk will go everywhere. If the egg is boiled the yolk will be hard and it will not go anywhere.…
