August 13, 2010 Essay # 1

There are various people in our life that affect us in different ways, whether good or bad, they have had some sort of influence on our thoughts, emotions, or growing process. Yet, there is one person who has greatly influenced us, that we have grown to admire them above the others. One individual who I admire is Oprah Winfrey. Although she has succeeded remarkably in her career, becoming one of the world's top African-American billionaires, her childhood wasn't as easy. Winfrey encountered many obstacles during her adolescence, which she overcame and was able to make it to the top. She had to move around as do many teenagers our age do, and it's not a stable environment to grow up in. She was molested repeatedly, and had a miscarriage and these experiences are overwhelming and emotionally destructive at such a young age. Winfrey moved away from her mother, where those incidents happened, and lived with her father in Nashville, Tennessee. From there, her life started to ease and there were more opportunities for her in Tennessee. Eventually, her career began improving and as she took on some acting roles, they liked her and wanted her to start her own television program in 1984. Many people tend to look at her current success, and believe that it just fell upon her hands, without seeing the real effort that she put into her career. Many teenagers go through the whole moving around process, yet don't see what value can come from it. And also, many teenagers believe that fame and success will just happen to them, without actually finding any resources or acquiring any skills for it. Overall, Oprah Winfrey has many admirable qualities that I admire. She is educated, brave, and influential. She has influenced me to work hard despite any hardships I may endure during the process. One can look at her experiences and be motivated to push forward.
