Why American Citizens Should Support the USA Patriot Act.
In the aftermath of the September 11th attacks, it was discovered that America’s ability to detect and combat international as well as domestic terrorism was adequate. Almost immediately, sweeping administrative and operational changes were implemented throughout the government and its bureaucratic agencies. As a result of September 11th 2001, Patriot Act I (Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001) was enacted. The U.S. Patriot Act was enacted for the soul purpose of domestic security enhancement. In 2003 The Domestic Security Enhancement Act of 2003 came about and is also known as the Patriot Act II. The Patriot Act is an extraordinary act that has increased the protection of American citizens in these perilous times. However, in order to prevent future terrorist attacks on U.S. soil, the Patriot Act must be supported and embraced by all Americans.
Although the USA Patriot Act has been both embraced and highly criticized, I believe that it’s essential for the protection of America’s freedom and security. Isgro Francesco made the following statement Migration World Magazine in the January 2001 issue. “In these extraordinary times, many Americans believe that the federal government has to take extraordinary measures to protect our homeland from further terrorist’s attacks. The Department of Justice, together with the local levels, have launched investigations of historical proportions in their efforts to locate suspected terrorists” (46). I don’t agree with opponents that describe the Patriot Act as an erosion of civil liberties. I believe the Patriot Act has succeeded in preventing further terrorist attacks in the United States due to its aggressive measures.
