Partial-Birth Abortions
In the continuing debates on the legality and morality of abortion, "partial birth" abortions have become a hot topic. What exactly is a partial birth abortion? Nebraska state legislation defines it as "an abortion procedure in which the person performing the abortion partially delivers a living unborn child before killing the unborn child and completing delivery." It is a very cruel procedure which includes a breech delivery of a living unborn child which leaving only the head in the cervix. Then surgical scissors are inserted into the child’s head where the baby is then killed. A suction is put into the hole and the child’s brain is suctioned out. Hearing the brutality of this procedure alone should change any individuals mind. Partial-birth abortions should continue to be illegal. There is a need for partial-birth abortions to stay illegal even after the Freedom of Choice Act is signed. The plan for keeping this type of abortion illegal is to explain the affects it has on not only the mental and physical health of the mothers but also of the people involved in the extraction.
As gruesome as regular abortions are they are still legal in the United States, but in Kessler's article he offers factual and detailed information on the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003, which prohibits a person from "intentionally delivering a living fetus." He goes on by explaining the procedure of most abortions and then the banned procedure version of abortion. Kessler describes the political views within the Stenberg v. Carhart case and with Stenberg’s decision in mind President George W. Bush signed the Partial-Birth Abortion Act. This article could easily be a resource for anyone thinking of having an abortion.
