Adjustment to a new environment in the career world requires coping skills to avoid excess stress and health problems. With the belief in themselves, guidance and support from their parents, the adult raised under authoritative parents can cope with new positions in the career world in a positive and beneficial manner (Nevid & Rathus, 2005). Having been expected to achieve goals with willingness and determination, this adult will be able to move around in the career field with drive and determination.
Coping with changes in the career world are not as easy for the adult raised under authoritarian parents. Strict guidelines, demands to adhere to the guidelines and a lack of respect, can hinder the adult from obtaining realistic goals (Nevid & Rathus, 2005). Although love and respect are present, the adult will not know how to make a wise decision due to lack of support and guidance from the parent. The transition to a new position might bring on stress that the adult cannot cope with causing further complications. The new stress will hinder the adult from performing his or her duties to the best of their ability, adding to the stress already present (Nevid & Rathus, 2005).
In a world where one is able to do pretty much what they want to do, coping skills are usually lacking (Nevid & Rathus, 2005). In order for an adult to conform to a new career position, he or she must know and understand the skills necessary to cope with the stress and new expectations of that position. In this case, the adult will not be able to adhere to the position without bringing on stress from being overwhelmed. This adult will be a poor communicator causing a hindrance in the career field, and besides the added stress of new job duties, the adult may not feel confident to perform his or her duties (Nevid & Rathus, 2005).
