mestizo groups. Paraguay declared its independence from Spain in 1811. it went unopposed by its former king and was soon under the rule of a dictator known as El Supremo. The country was forced into a long period of isolation and self-sufficiency. The 1900's began war with the Bolivia. A 1954 military coup placed General Stroessner in power and Paraguay began a 35-year period of terror. The megalomaniac used torture, murder and corruption to remain in power until he was overthrown in 1989. The political situation in Paraguay has remained tenuous since then. Corruption, oppression and murder continue to plague the country’s government. Stroessner died on August 16, 2006, in Brasília, at the age of 93. But still peasant land invasions and violent street protests happen with regularity. Paraguay has two official languages Spanish and Guarani. Spanish is used in schools, government, and in commerce. But, people also use Guarani in everyday conversations. Books, magazines, and newspapaers are published to the public in both languages.

The total population in Paraguay was last recorded at 6.6 million people in 2011,changing 244 percent during the last 50 years. In 1960 until 2011, Paraguay Population averaged 3.9 Million reaching an all time high of 6.6 Million in December of 2011 and a record low of 1.9 Million in December of 1960.

Paraguay has many major cities, but the 3 major ones are: Asunción, Encarnación, Ciudad del Este.These are the main cities because of all their attactions, and the special things about each city. Asunción has a historic downtown and has been coming around and now shows signs of its rich history. It has important architectural groupings, such as the Riviera Block, a preserved block of the city that is site of the oldest house in the city, the Cathedral, López Palace, the Railroad, and the House of Independence, all of them being quite old.
