When people go to the movies, they never give any thought to how the movie was made. Most people go to the movies to be entertained. The intent of this paper is to describe how an entire film is analyzed---bringing meaning to the art of film watching. It takes many pieces and parts to create this work of art called a film (movie): theme, ideas, dialogue, storyline, scenery, actors, the editing of the film, music etc... A film is like a puzzle. Once you put it together you see the total picture.
As one begins to analyze a film, it starts with a challenge. One can not stop the movie--it is in continuous motion. “One must be focused and concentrate most of their attention to continuous interplay of image, sound and movement on the screen”(Boggs & Petrie, 2008, p.5).
The first part that needs to be examined is the theme of the film. The theme is “The central concern around which the literary work or film is structured, its unifying focus. The theme consists of five different Thematic elements: plot, emotional effect or mood, character, style or structure, and ideas”(Boggs & Petrie, 2008, p 20). Although all elements will be present in all films, the analyst must determine which element has the greatest emphasize. Once you determine which element is the main focus, this will aid in establishing what message the director is trying to convey to the audience.

Now lets examine each thematic element separate to see how they contribute to the whole.
“A plots focus is fast paced action, and excitement. The purpose is entertainment, with very little significance to much else outside of the story line”(Boggs & Petrie, 2008, p.21). An example would be Spider-man.
