In the Philippines, Gawad Kalinga is building empowered communities by people with faith and patriotism; driven by a culture of caring and sharing, dedicated to eradicate poverty and restore human dignity.

History

1995: Hope Begins
Couples for Christ initiated its work with the poor in Bagong Silang, Caloocan City, the biggest slum in Metro Manila. The first youth camp for juvenile delinquents changed the lives of 127 gang members, the first seeds of the work that would eventually be called Gawad Kalinga.

1996 to 1999: Sacrifice and Perseverance
Social engineering began in Bagong Silang by providing training and education for gang members, and working with their families in beautifying community areas. The very first GK house was built for the Adduru family.

2000: Setting the Foundations
Gawad Kalinga Awards was launched, and 11 teams pioneered the first GK villages outside of Bagong Silang. Programs for shelter, child and youth development and health programs were started. 2002: First Major Partner
Inspired by the commitment of Singles for Christ members who raised funds and built 16 GK homes in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, Philippine President Gloria Arroyo allocated P30 million to build 1,000 GK homes. This was matched by local areas, and allowed GK to be replicated in key areas throughout the country. 2003: The Nation Responds
