Paper chromatography is a method used to separate mixtures into their different parts. To do paper chromatography you need porous paper and chromatography solution which is water and isopropyl alcohol. These solvents were poured in separated cups. About 3-4 cm wide and 10 cm long four strips of coffee filter paper were printed with a small mark of permanent ink and water soluble ink with about 2 cm distance from the bottom of the paper. . The filter paper were labeled on the top and determined if it is permanent or non-permanent. A dot was put on the near end of both filter papers. The filter papers were just above the water and alcohol level. After a few minutes, changes were observed.

A permanent marker or indelible marker is a type of marker pen that is used to create permanent writing on an object. In general, the ink comprises a main carrier solvent, a glyceride, a pyrrolidone, a resin and a colorant, making it waterproof. It is capable of writing on a variety of surfaces from paper to metal to stone. They come in a variety of tip sizes (ultra-fine to wide), shapes (chisel point, bullet tip, and wide bristle), and colors (metallic, or ultraviolet reactive). Like spray paint, these markers contain volatile organic compounds which evaporate to dry the ink. Permanent marker is another name for "waterproof" marker. A non-permanent also called a white board or dry-eraser marker. It uses an erasable ink, made to be use on stick, non-porous writing surface, for temporary writing with overhead projectors, white boards, and the like. The erasable ink does not contain the toxic chemical compounds; xylene and/or toluene have been used in permanent markers. Paper chromatography is a procedure used to separate substances in a mixture based on the different mobilities of the components.
