  1. What are some key things you’ve learned about this culture through reading the scholarly literature? [about 300 words]

  * Through my research on the elderly people in nursing homes, I have learned that there are rules for people to even enter the nursing homes. It is very hard for anyone but elderly people to become a resident of a nursing home. Nursing home stays are very expensive, so insurance is a must. Most nursing homes residents have Medicare coverage. However, another form of insurance is needed because Medicare only takes care of 22 days. Most people have Medicaid, a state funded program. In order to qualify for Medicaid a candidate must be aged (65+), blind, or disabled.
Statistics have shown that on average, residents in nursing homes are white, widowed, functionally dependent women. Many of the diagnosis are mental. Some have dementia, Alzheimer’s, and diseases of the circulatory system. For the most part, elders are transported from a hospital to a nursing home. Many nursing homes mistreat and even fail to treat the patients in their facility. They also administer narcoleptic medications. Patients need to be better monitored and definitely treated more like people instead of prisoners.
