INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The social support system is a composite of interpersonal relationships that satisfy specific personal social needs. Social support is a component of human relationships, which maybe formal or informal. An individual’s social support system comprises several multiple networks that include the kinship (spouse or partner, family members, and other relatives), social and role (friends, neighbors, and work associates), professional (health care providers and other professionals), and community (church, community groups and agencies) networks.
Social skills are important processes of structuring a man’s whole being. These connect to a man’s response to his environment emotionally, mentally, and biophysically. In relation to this, what a person’s upbringing and feelings are greatly influenced by his/her interaction with the environment, family, friends and others. Through these social skills, one can enhance his or her interpersonal relationship with others.
Social support is the provision of information that leads people to believe they are cared for, loved, esteemed, valued, and a member of a network of communication and mutual obligation (Cobb 81). In this matter, social skills are needed to connect and relate with the social groups and by doing so, will bridge between gaps created by a distorted belief of being separated from the group.
The family is the microworld of the Filipino adolescent. It performs very important functions providing biological support, emotional security, protection and status to members. Through its socialization functions, the family plays an important role in the transmission of cultural values, beliefs, and customs; in the molding of personality and character of its members; and in ensuring conformity to norms.
