EXTERNAL ASSESSMENT

General Environment
PSO’s general environment is uncertain and some what complex because of the following factors

Social
The educated population is becoming conscious about the threats that oil companies pose to the environment therefore PSO being the largest oil company in Pakistan has a social responsibility of educating its customers about efficient usage of fuel as heavy usage has an adverse affect on the environment and economy of the country. PSO would be one of the major companies to feel the brunt of a social movement against organizations that harm the environment.

Technological
In the technological environment new methods of refining and distributing oil and oil related products are continuously changing for the better. Keeping up with technologies is vital for PSO.

Economic
Over the last year of recession and the year before that, it had been proved that during economically welfare times the demand for oil rises consistently which raises the price of oil per barrel in the international market and vice versa. PSO needs to be cautious of these factors as well.

Ecological
Oil companies are always a target of criticism as their products have an adverse affect on the environment. Keeping this in mind PSO has launched a “zero pollution accidents and zero occupational illness” initiative where it tries to do research on minimizing all these factors. The importance of this can be clearly highlighted by the goals of Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) committee at PSO.

Political
PSO has maintained a 30 year mutually beneficial business relationship with Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) as Pakistan needs to import oil to meet its demands. This implies that if at any point in time the political relationships between Pakistan and Kuwait are dampened or the less likely chance of Kuwait becoming politically unstable, PSO will suffer greatly.
