Tropical Disease Foundation
The Tropical Disease Foundation (Foundation) is a private, non-stock, non-profit organization founded in 1984 by a group of physicians. It is supported by research grants, donations and endowments. Its objective is to undertake researches and provide training and service in the control and management of tropical infectious diseases.

Architect, Founder of the Pablo R. Antonio Jr. Design Consultancy, Inc., has been a philanthropist in the cause of the Foundation, and has provided free architectural services in the various physical plant projects of the Foundation. The Architectural Firm specializes in the design of healthcare facilities (Asian Hospital & Medical Center, Makati Medical Center), semiconductor plants and learning institutions.

Emiliano Zapata, born on August 8, 1879, in the village of Anenecuilco, Morelos (Mexico), Emiliano Zapata was of mestizo heritage and the son of a peasant medier, (a sharecropper or owner of a small plot of land). From the age of eighteen, after the death of his father, he had to support his mother and three sisters and managed to do so very successfully. The little farm prospered enough to allow Zapata to augment the already respectable status he had in his native village. In September of 1909, the residents of Anenecuilco elected Emiliano Zapata president of the village's "defense committee," an age-old group charged with defending the community's interests. In this position, it was Zapata's duty to represent his village's rights before the president-dictator of Mexico, Porfirio Díaz, and the governor of Morelos, Pablo Escandón. During the 1880s, Mexico had experienced a boom in sugar cane production, a development that led to the acquisition of more and more land by the hacienderos or plantation owners. Their plantations grew while whole villages disappeared and more and more medieros and other peasants lost their livelihoods or were forced to work on the haciendas. It was under these conditions that a plantation called El Hospital neighboring Zapata's village began encroaching more and more upon the small farmers' lands. This was the first conflict in which Emiliano Zapata established his reputation as a fighter and leader. He led various peaceful occupations and re-divisions of land, increasing his status and his fame to give him regional recognition.…

The lifestyle of a slave in Cuba during the period of independence seemed pretty horrible as Montejo explained but the slaves managed to find ways to get through it. Where they lived seemed like the harshest part, which were the barracoons. The barracoons were crammed and locked up by a padlock during the night. Montejo describes them as very hot and unsanitary. Since it was hot, Montejo claims that the place swarmed with fleas and ticks that gave the entire work force infections and diseases.” They were put in disgusting living quarters. Montejo explains to us that they would bathe themselves in a stream, which was nice because there was one near every plantation. He tells us that the slaves themselves would cut their own hair with a long knife provided to them by their masters. He claims he became the master of cutting hair and described their heads as looking like “melon skins.” When they would brush their teeth they would use soap-tree bark and Montejo said that it made their teeth very white. These slaves did a great job of maintaining their social and cultural traditions, every Sunday they woke up and there would be drumming that started around twelve of one o’clock. While this didn’t entirely give them a sense of more freedom, Montejo explains that it made their day on the plantation a lot easier because everyone was joyful and upbeat about the drums being played. They played these instruments they made throughout the day and that gave them a little piece of their culture back to them. The Spanish Crown put limits on how much they were punished, but that doesn’t mean they weren’t. One of the cruel ways the plantation owners would punish them would be by betting on the “Maní” dances that the slaves would perform and that would essentially turn into a one on one fight.
