Overview of Management
Frustrated about going all over the town of San Diego, in search for ingredients for a meal, Kathy Kudler decided to open a gourmet store. Her plan involved in opening a store where consumers could buy everything they need to make their gourmet meal in one stop. In 1998 Kathy open her first store in La Jolla. Her plan was such a success that within five years she open two additional stores one in Del Mar in 2000 and the other in Encinitas in 2003 (University of Phoenix, 2007).
According to Gomez-Mejia and Balkin (2002), the primary functions of management are planning and strategizing, organizing, leading, and controlling. To keep a successful business Kathy has managed to implement the four functions of management in her-self and in her staff. Kathy and her store managers are responsible for the planning and strategizing of the company. If it were not for Kathy’s original plan to start a businesses and her ability to set appropriate strategies to accomplish, Kudler Fine Food would not have the success it has at the present time. The store managers are also responsible for the planning and strategizing function at Kudler Fine Food. The store managers have to plan and strategize on ways to manage the store within the set budget, operate guidelines, coordinate sales promotions, and plan work schedules of employees (University of Phoenix, 2007).
The Director of store operations Yvonne Reynolds, The director of finance and Accounting Harvey Stephens, and the Director of Administration and Resources are responsible for the organizing function of management. “Organizing involves specifying how the firm’s human, financial, physical, informational and technical resources are arranged and coordinated to perform tasks to achieve desired goals” (Gomez-Mejia & Balkin, 2002, pp. 6).
