Volunteers can be found at many different types of organizations and are an important part of the work that is done by many nonprofit organizations (NPO). When working with volunteers there are many different aspects that have to be looked at for the volunteers and the organization to be successful. An organization like a NPO that utilizes volunteers has to make sure that they are aware of the liabilities that come with using volunteers. This is very important since every year there are over ninety million Americans that donate their time to organizations as volunteers (Grossman & Furano, 2000). This is one reason that an organization needs to make sure that they have a successful volunteer manager or volunteer management team in place. Volunteers do not only need a successful volunteer management team, but a successful volunteer recruitment and retention team is needed so that those volunteers that are an asset to an organization are given a reason to continue to volunteer for that organization. Without the retention team, volunteers are not going to want to continue to give their time to the organization.…

The nation's economy will be adversely affected in areas such as unemployment, Social Security, and even retirement benefits, by the outsourcing of American jobs to foreign countries. This country needs to take a look at some of the ways that outsourcing to foreign countries has affected those who have already lost their jobs due to outsourcing. An article by the Washington DC Office of Public Policy says that, "Some experts argue that offshoring [outsourcing] provides access to good middle class jobs that would not be available in developing countries" (2004). Outsourcing is a business trend that has greatly increased in recent years with more and more companies outsourcing part or whole of their functions/activities. Outsourcing can be defined as the transfer of a business function or activity previously produced in-house to an external supplier which then takes prime responsibility for fulfilling the task (Finn, 2007). Although companies may perceive outsourcing as an alternative to reduce costs as a result of access to economies of scale and improve performance as a result of unique expertise that a large outsourcing vendor can deliver (Roodhooft and Warlop 1999 cited by Jiang and Qureshi 2006), outsourcing has many hidden cost and risks that can lead to create various financial and non financial problems. This essay will discuss whether outsourcing achieves economies of scale. More specifically this essay will explore current trends in outsourcing. Then it will discuss how outsourcing vendors achieve economies of scale and cost reductions. Furthermore it will give an insight of hidden costs and disadvantages in order to give a complete picture of outsourcing benefits and drawbacks.…

Coordinating volunteers is a key challenge in rapid-onset disasters. Successful disaster response depends on agencies and authorities integrating volunteers quickly into a coordinated strategy. It also depends on good volunteer management and productive collaborations. The challenges our communities face cannot be met by any one organization alone. Successful collaboration requires all participants to carry their share of the workload while trying to maintain their own distinct identities. We want to ensure that communities are prepared by providing efficient tools and resources and empowering them to become more involved in disaster response. There is a strong demand from communities for a more regionalized approach for volunteer management in disaster response; a strong call for clear leadership and guidance from the state.…
