Public Speaking

For my out of class critique I have chosen to talk about my Into to Mechanical Engineering professor Doctor Solomon. Him being from a different country has its pro's and con's when he speaking in public as well as in our class. When it comes to what I do not like about his speaking style, there are a decent amount of things that bother me. For example when he speaks, he has a strong middle eastern accent that disturbs the pronunciation of his words. This makes it very hard to understand what he is trying to say or explain to the class. Along with his accent, when he is teaching a new topic, he reads straight out of the book and it seems that he doesn't know the topic at hand at all. While reading the topic, he tends to never look up and make eye contact with the class. These are just some of the poor speaking skills i have noticed. Now he does have one or two things that I have liked or good public speaking qualities that he has shown in class. When he is speaking in class, I believe that he know his English is not the best in the world. This is correct by him always writing down the main topic and supporting topics on the board so us as students can read it, therefore understanding the topic better. This allows us to read and hear the topic. Even though there are more bad than good public speaking manners that Dr. Solomon does, he is a decent professor. If he wants to become a great professor, Dr. Solomon needs to improve drastically on his public speaking skills.

Earlier this semester I had the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Kahn, and asked him some questions. I was interested in asking him questions because I had admired him as a teacher, and a person throughout the semester. I had never met someone who appeared as intelligent as Dr. Kahn, but was also down to earth. In class he spoke in a way that was easy to understand, he also accepted, and answered our questions no matter how ignorant, or insignificant.…

“Want-Creation Fuels Americans’ Addictiveness” is a confusing title as much as the essay belonging to it. In the essay, which initially appeared in the St. Paul Pioneer Press Dispatch, Author Philip Slater poorly emphasizes that American society has contributed and amplified Americans’ addiction behavior. The article is initially engaging to a reader, however, the transitions between topics can lose the reader’s interest because of the ambiguity. Slater also brings good points for the reader to consider but he fails to correlate them together in a manner that could easily identifiable. Slater is also unclear as to the intention of his argument by his manner of bringing up irrelevant issues that are present in American society. Ultimately, the poor organization and Slater’s inability to show the relationship between the examples given make this essay difficult to read and difficult to comprehend the purpose for which it was written for.…

The main problem I’ve had here were with professors who’ve gotten ahead or above themselves because of their level and tenure. I do agree, however, with Hacker and Dreifus when they said some professors “have no reasons to improve their teaching” (181).Some of my professors at Grambling State University are wonderful, were some aren’t as wonderful. Some professors come to class…

He had great eye contact and really strived to make sure that students were really connected with his speech and his message. He gestured with his hands and looked around the Chapel at about everyone. His volume and rate was splendid because it wasn’t too fast and he looked completely comfortable standing up there and speaking. I think that his strengths is emphasizing different phrases or words throughout his speech, volume, rate, and gestures. I think that he could work a little more on eye contact because there is always room for improvement, but it was still pretty great. He did a pretty good job of making sure to look at both sides of the audience in the CFL, which is actually a very hard thing to do. Sometimes people play to one side more than the other side because it is their dominant side.…

The first time I had Mr. Coward as a teacher was for my ninth-grade Physical Science class. From the first day, I could tell that his class was going to be much harder than any other science class I have ever had. My entire class and I struggled with understanding dimensional analysis. Since we had never encountered this topic, we started to make bad grades. Because of this he took a few days of class to break down this method so we would grasp it. After that our grades improved and we went on to learn harder things.…

His gestures were very relevant and I was glad he went over that with us. Also, he made a lot of funny jokes which was good because he kept us interested. I think that if the crowd was larger, that his stories and speeches would be able to touch many people. Because his voice was so smooth, it was easy to listen to him for a long amount of time. You didn’t feel like you were being taught at or lectured to and he also made that point. He told us that we need to be able to talk to our audience not at them. I thought his volume was a little quiet, but that was just because it was his casual voice. I wasn’t sure if he was capable of being louder but then he was when he was making his radio announcer voice. His stories were also appropriate for all ages…

    Critique on Class

In 1997, James Cameron’s screenplay Titanic was released. Although the film is solely based on a fictitious romance between two star crossed lovers, there are particular aspects of the movie that deal with realistic issues between different socio-economic classes as well. When the Titanic began to sink, class ranking determine the lives that were more valuable. The author utilizes the historic tragedy of the infamous sinking ship to display how significant class becomes when trying to survive an unfortunate event. Additionally, Cameron incorporates a fictional romance to display how two people (Rose and Jack) can be in love regardless of class. The film argues that the lives of higher social status on the Titanic were more beneficial than lower class citizens and that the different class groups should not engage with each other; however, class should not be a determining factor of who survives a tragedy or the interactions of diverse people. Eliminating the social class hierarchy during the rescue of the Titanic’s inhabitants would have eliminated chaos, increased the survival rate and given the opportunity for Rose and Jack to find true love.…

My English teacher paved the way for me to be a better speaker. It all started when she told me to speak some words about my achievements in school life in front of a crowd. I felt so nervous, and I said all the achievements the wrong way. When I moved in front of the crowd, my heart beat increased. My hands became sweaty. I felt so cold. I thought to say many good things about my teachers, but I spoke all the wrong things. I did not know what happened to me. My speech became laughable in the class. The teacher understood my problem. She told me about her first experience of speech in her class. In her first speech, she felt so nervous and cried in front of the crowd. It happened in her 7th grade year. Her experience relaxed me, but I was still feeling so depressed. My teacher came to me and sat with me. She taught me about thesis and writing techniques. She gave me a book to learn the basic skills of speech. I bought books to learn basic skills of speech. Every day, I spent some time reading the text books for speech. I watched many speeches on television and the Internet. From the speeches, I gained great knowledge about major issues facing society. One day I watched a speech by A.B.J. Abdul Khalam, the ex-president of India. The speech was about his dreams about a developed India. I felt patriotic when I watched the speech. I was inspired to be able to give a speech like him, so I practiced my speech by speaking in front of a mirror, and with time I became better. Research and practice helped me to speak better.…
