A Journey down Othello’s Rise & Demise
The story of Othello first begins in seventeenth century Venice in the midst of the war between Venice and Turkey. The story first begins during an argumentative conversation between Roderigo and Iago—the villain. The conversation touched base on what their next move would be now that Roderigo’s love—Desdemona, has married the protagonist dubbed as Othello. Therefore Iago is more than willing to help Roderigo separate the two of them for personal issues that are not yet mentioned at the beginning of the story. This evidently led to an evil plot stemming from the mind of Iago. Both of these men soon find themselves at the front of Senator Brabanzio’s residence, with intentions to warm up the Senator’s mind with judgmental thoughts about Othello. As soon as he hears what Iago had to tell him, Brabanzio rushed into the house and looked for Desdemona. To his surprise he found an empty room with no Desdemona. This led to an awful stir of emotions and loathing towards Othello. A little deeper in the first act it is revealed that the reason for Iago’s hatred towards the general is because he had recently promoted Cassio over Iago. The recurring character in this story, or ‘static character’ if you may, would be Cassio. Although Iago pretends that there is nothing wrong with him, he seeks revenge behind Othello’s back.

To Iago’s delight, he prepares an encounter between Roderigo and later on, Brabanzio. He feeds Othello to the wolves and then gets accused for using witchcraft in order to keep Desdemona to his side. Although it is obvious that Brabanzio suffers from a bad case of racism, he continues to lie so that the Duke does not overlook this case.
