This article profiles Irish writer Oscar Wilde. Regarded as one of the world's greatest dramatists, Wilde too called the Emerald Isle the land of his birth. As was the case with many scribes of his time, Wilde's works went mostly unnoticed until many years after his death. The genius of Wilde was through his implication of his own moral system and outlandish ways of living. His most famous work, The Importance of Being Earnest, is a twisted moral tale. The story revolves around two men, each courting women who cannot and will only marry a man who's first name is Earnest. His literary pieces are the foundation of the comedic plays that would become popular in the early 20th Century.

Oscar Wilde’s STYLE of writing is, in many ways, just as important and rich as the CONTENT.  In what ways does Oscar Wilde’s particular use of language enhance meaning in the novel?  Consider elements such as tone, diction, imagery, irony, allusion, symbolism, metaphor, personification, etc.  In response to this topic, you may focus on Wilde’s use of a particular stylistic element throughout the novel.  Alternatively, you could choose one specific passage that you find interesting, and do a close reading of Wilde’s use of language in that section of text. Oscar Wilde writing style is very clever in that he allows the reader to comprehend the novel on various levels. Like Hamish and many others stated, paradox is a central tactic used within the novel. Lord Henry’s speeches contain several examples or paradox in which influence Dorian Gray heavily. Wilde’s overall tone becomes very critical towards the end, in that opinions develop on many aspects of the characters. Allusion is used to refer to other works such as Shakespeare. Emphasis on the lifestyle of Victorian upper class is reoccuring throughout with over emphasized irony and paradox.
