Osama Bin Laden: From Freedom Fighter to International Renegade

The new millennium is wrought with global concern. As in countless other ways, the rise in technology has heightened man’s ability to travel, communicate, find information and find people who share similar beliefs. A very negative aspect of this technology is the ease at which terrorists can unite and organize. One man has become a poster boy for terrorism in the greater portion of the world. That man is Osama bin Laden. He shocked the world by masterminding or supporting a violent act of terrorism against America and consequently, invoked a very negative view on people from the Middle East. Osama bin Laden’s motives and influences are foreign to Americans or westerners, but nonetheless hold a form of truth that Americans and the whole world will have to accept, or at least try and understand in order to learn from past mistakes and not just use the man as a scapegoat. Osama bin Laden is Saudi Arabian and was born in 1957. He is a thin man at 160 pounds and 6’6’’(FBI). Born into one of the richest families in the world, he was very privileged and educated at the prestigious King Abdulaziz University. He was born the17th of over fifty children, (his father had 11 wives) and was about 11 years old when he inherited an estimated 300 million dollars. He was a businessman and held/holds very strong political and religious convictions. (CNN, website) The source of his family’s wealth stems from successful construction and contracting companies based in Yemen and Saudi Arabia. His father Mohammed bin Laden, was the highly respected founder of the company and built his wealth through hard work, charity and honorable deeds, (Jaquard, 13). With this upbringing Osama bin Laden learned the skills he would need to do business and make deals and effectively to carry out his plans.
