Anti-colonization and dehumanization in Oroonoko

In Oroonoko, Aphra Behn sheds light on the horrors of slavery and expansionism that Britain was conducting while assembling its overseas empire. Behn paints the majority of the white colonists as unmitigated illustrations of greed, dishonesty, and brutality. Through these depraved individuals, Behn regularly articulates the barbarism innate in British nature as opposed to the African prince Oroonoko, whom is conveyed as the quintisential model of nobility, physical prowness, and honor. These reoccuring motifs apparent throughout the literary work reveal Behn's intention of undermining the inhumane treatment of the colonized populice and the criticism of overseas expansion. Upon close examination of the literary work, one could conclusively view Aphra Behn's Oroonoko as an assailment against the dehumanization of the colonized people and a subtle criticism of Britain s external colonization. The first account of Behn's anti-colonization position begins with the introduction of the native Indians of Surinam, of whom have been tainted and stripped of their virtue due to the intrusion of the British. The natives of Surinam are depicted as living in perfect peace in a world enshrouded in beauty and innocense. The narrator of the tale stated that, "… these people represented to me an absolute idea of the first state of innocense, before man knew how to sin" (2184). Behn goes further to compare the natives to Adam and Eve when the narrator explains that the aprons the natives wear are similar to the "fig leaves" that Adam and Eve wore (2184). By establishing this description of the natives, one can begin to veiw the natives as innocent as Adam and Eve before the fall of man. This allusion to biblical scripture illustrates that just as Adam and Eve were corrupted by Satan, the natives innocense is corrupted by the Europeans. The narrator incontestably gives this implication when she states, "They have a native justice

    Behn conveys a message that slavery is cruel and dehumanizing through her literary work Oroonoko, or The Royal Slave. At first Oroonoko did not see slavery to be cruel; it wasn’t until he was sold into slavery and had to walk a mile in the slave’s shoes that he realized slavery was brutal. From Oroonoko’s observations when he is a slave, he characterizes the slaves as basically animals when he says: “They suffered not like men, who might find a glory and fortitude in oppression, but like dogs that loved the whip and bell, and fawned the more they were beaten”(Behn 961).     Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness” from 1899 is set in a period where ivory was a very valuable commodity and was most common in Africa, thus was a time in which countries such as Belgium were involved in exploring and colonising the wild continent whilst extracting its valuable resources. “Heart of Darkness” is a three-part novella in which the story of Charlie Marlow’s adventure into the heart of Africa down the Congo River is told within the story of a sailor recounting Marlow’s own telling of the story on the deck of a ship as they sailed on the Thames River. The dominant reading that prevails through the thick jungle of adjectives and tangents that is “Heart of Darkness” involves notions of civilisation, comparing the advanced/evolved European to the savage/primitive African. However, there are several other rather concealed readings that can be drawn upon analysis. For example; “Heart of Darkness” contains examples throughout the story that enable a resistant feminist reading to be applied with regards to the western or European characters of the Aunt and the intended. When analysing the way in which ‘the African Goddess’ is portrayed in the story however, one is able to contrast the way in which western females are presented and the way in which gender roles are portrayed in a primitive Africa. It is clear that a resistant feminist reading doesn’t apply to her but rather an alternative feminist reading suggesting women have more power than men in a society of ‘savage natives’; Africa.…
