Organizational Structure
The FMC Corporation has several plants across the United States specializing in several different product areas. Today they cover several different continents. The FMC (Food Machinery Corporation) and Harsco (the Harrisburg Steel Company) merged their defense units to form United Defense, Limited Partnership (UDLP). FMC began in 1884 by producing a new kind of spray pump and at this time concentrated its manufacturing to agricultural machinery. (Best Manufacturing Practices, 2007) FMC Corporation today maintains leading positions in three chemical markets: Agricultural, Specialty and Industrial. (FMC Corporation, 2007) The following will look at the management style of the FMC Aberdeen plant which builds missile canisters for the Navy and employees around 100 employees. Mr. Dailey of the Green River plant has asked us to evaluate the management practices of the Aberdeen plant to see if they could be implemented in the Green River plant. There are several differences between the two plants such as Aberdeen’s management is based on trust and consists of employees within each area of production being on a team and assigning a leader and then other different titles with responsibilities, but everyone on the team gets a chance to have each title and perform the job duties that it entails. This type of management is easy with only 100 employees and the production of one product. Green River has over 100 customers and produces several different products with over 1,150 employees. Green River has a plant manager, who also has managers underneath of him and more underneath of them.
