The human services field focuses on helping those in need. Human service organizations can be schools, churches, hospitals, community organizations, and a host of other organizations who have a mission or purpose of helping others. Any environment that has people working together for any amount of time may require assistance in gauging how well the employees work together. If people cannot effectively work together, they cannot effectively help others. Organizational psychology helps employers understand how to assist the employees thereby helping the organization. The subsequent paragraphs will discuss; the definition of organizational psychology, the role of research and statistics in organizational psychology, and describe how the practice of organizational psychology is used in organizations. The information in this paper largely relies on the group discussions and the text readings from week one of the Organizational Psychology class.
What Is Organizational Psychology?
Prior to understanding how organizational psychology can influence or affect an organization or agency, the term organizational psychology needs a definition. Organizational psychology is the study of people in the work environment. The definition taken from the text readings is the simplest way to explain organizational psychology. “Organizational psychology is a field that utilizes scientific methodology to better understand the behavior of individuals working in organizational settings” (Jex & Britt, 2008). Organizational psychology is the study that examines the individuals and groups within an organization and how they work together.
