Abstract
The purpose of this article is to project and analyze the importance of Organizational Citizenship Behaviour (OCB), the factors or determinants affecting OCB and various methods or strategies through which OCB can be enhanced within an organization. Initially the prominence of OCB within an organization, along with its after effects and advantages are studied. Then the determinants that help in predicting OCB are listed and analyzed further to find, which one of these determinants strongly predict OCB, so that more emphasis can be given to these determinants in order to foster and sustain OCB within an organization. It is observed that job satisfaction, organizational commitment and organizational fairness predict OCB. But from these studies it is also evident that cognitive part of job satisfaction and organizational fairness play a major role in predicting OCB. By taking these main predictors of OCB into consideration, different strategies or methods are studied and analyzed which will have a direct influence in developing and fostering OCB within an organization. These strategies or methods for the development of OCB discussed comprises of proper use of conflict resolution techniques, matching need for cognition to high task complexities, involving employees in decision making, bestowing appropriate job accountability, using positive social powers and refraining from abusive supervision within an organization.
