Mr. Nepembe has come a long way and is an inspiration to those who are discouraged and hopeless. He has turned the worst experience into something positive and is ploughing it back into his community. Subsequent to his jail term he realized that it is not what he wants to do with his life and chose to get an education and encourage others to do the same. He became the architect of his own life and determines his own destiny. Mr. Nepembe gained knowledge and could thus become part of society in a positive way in contrast with his devious past. The importance of education in this regard is irrefutable, according to Durkheim (1925) education plays an important role in socialization, which is the social process through which children develop an awareness of social norms and values, and achieve a distinct sense of self, and it teaches the skills needed to perform specialist occupations. Mr. Nepembe was a criminal and did things that landed him in trouble with the law and almost cost him his life. He deviated from the norm, and in order for him to change his fate he needed a way fit in and become part of society. Education was his ticket out of his situation. He needed a job and a sense of belonging. He did not come from a loving family and his friends deserted him which made him feel excluded and isolated. When one is part of a group, one makes more informed choices about pressing issues. If Mr. Nepembe had friends that he could talk to or ask advice from, he might not have turned to abusing drugs and alcohol. Abram Maslow came up with the Hierarchy of Needs in 1943. There are five levels of needs namely physiological, security (safety), social (belonging), esteem, self-actualization. Belonging is a social need and interpersonal relationships are imperative for a normal life. Other theories also emphasize the need for interpersonal relationships and belonging like Alderfer’s ERG theory, which assert the need for interaction and relation (Relatedness needs) and McClelland’s theory of needs, which explains the need for affiliation. Mr. Nepembe demonstrates this need by expressing bitterness and abusing substances because of the lack of belonging. He did not have a support system where he could vent, ask for help and advice, share his happiness or sadness. Thus the reason for the need for belonging is to have a sense of identity and support system. People need to feel loved and cared for which boosts their self esteem and interaction (communicating, venting, loving, helping, advising, etc,) gives meaning to their life.

Mr. Nepembe conveyed his life story to numerous persons who questioned the topic of violence and crime among the youth. He knew that through informing and educating others he could have a positive impact on society. Mr. Nepembe used the communication technique of sharing his experience and how he felt when all these things went wrong in his life. Many young people in Namibia are faced with difficult choices every day and succumb to pressure from peers and situations. There are many reasons for crime among youths “media coverage of rising crime rates often focuses on ‘moral breakdown’ among young people and highlights such issues as vandalism, school truancy and drug use to illustrate the increasing ‘permissiveness’ in society”. On the 19 April 2012, a UNAM student viciously stabbed another student to death on campus. In Namibia there is a growing concern about the youths’ low morals.
