Organizational Behavioral Study for Adobe Systems Incorporated University of Phoenix School of Advanced Studies

Abstract
Adobe Systems Incorporated is committed to innovation. In 1982, Chuck Geschke and John Warnock founded Adobe when they set out to solve the problem of getting text and images on a computer screen. In 1983 they launched Adobe Post Script and were embraced as industry visionaries and leaders. Adobe’s Portable Document Format or PDF provided solutions for businesses and allowed enterprises to use this format in a secure manner. Adobe Systems is the leading provider of graphic design, publishing, and imaging software for Web and print production. The research for this paper shows Adobe Systems Incorporated commitment to its workforce and how this commitment leads to increased organizational performance.

Adobe Systems Incorporated is committed to leveraging the diversity of its workforce through a comprehensive set of programs designed to encourage a wide variety of ideas, backgrounds, and perspectives. This translates into a key competitive advantage and increased organizational performance (Adobe, n.d.). Background

Adobe Systems Incorporated (ASI) is an American global prominent software provider. The company was founded in December 1982 and went public in1986. The company has its headquarters in San Jose, California, United States of America (USA). The company licenses its technology to hardware manufacturers, software developers and service providers. Adobe has operations in the Americas, Europe, Middle East and Africa, and Asia which makes it geographically diversified revenue base company. In FY2009, 46.9% of the company’s revenues came of its software and related solutions in the Americas, 31.5% from Europe Middle East Africa, and 21.5% from Asia Pacific (Thompson, 2009).

The revenue result shows diversity in the company’s geographical revenue spread. The diversification of the revenue reduces its risk associated with adverse economic, political instability in the markets, and enhances its financial position. As a technology company Adobe operates in a rapid changing industry. Throughout Adobe’s history, the company had survived shifts in the industry from print to web publishing, electronic documents, and interactive experiences (Thompson, 2009). The changing technology trend- new products coming out rapidly- creates challenges for customers in terms of choice, and for businesses in terms of designing appropriate organizational structures to deal with customers demand and changing environment. Scott stated that, “While many specific measures of technology have been proposed, it appears that the most important dimensions to represent in relating technology to structure are complexity, uncertainty, and interdependence” (261). Despite operating in a complex, uncertain and interdependence among parts of the organization, Adobe is financially sound relative to Competitors. The company in 2009 delivered annual net income of $386.5 million (Thompson, 2009).

Purpose of the Study
In 1995 Fortune magazine ranked Adobe as an outstanding place to work (Adobe Systems Incorporated, 2010). The company was rated fifth in 2003, sixth in 2004 and 31 in 2007 as the best U.S. Company to work for. According to Scott, “contingency theorists have argued that some types of structures were better suited than others to certain tasks or environments (Scott, 2003, Chapter para.1). The purpose of this study is to test if diversification of operations and workforce (organizational design) can increase performance despite global economic down- turn and its impacts on the technology industry and organizations.
