Organizational Behavior is a misnomer. It is not the study of how organizations behave, but rather the study of individual behavior in an organizational setting. This includes the study of how individuals behave alone, as well as how individuals behave in groups and how it affects the organization. (Fuller, 2006) For instance, when an organization reviews its’ different departments heads and/or managers to analyze where it can improve this will be one type of Organizational Behavior. For example at the organization where the student works they have weekly finance meetings, to review the budgets and laborers production schedule on the various jobs. This helps upper management to see if they need to make any major changes in order to keep production going.
An organizational culture is defined as the shared assumptions, values, and beliefs that guide the actions of its members. As people work together to accomplish goals, whether it is groups to develop into organizations, or the sales department trying to reach its’ goal; as goals become more specific and longer-term, and work more specialized, organizations become both more formal and institutionalized. (Gilsdorf & Wagner-Marsh, 2006)
At the students’ organization in which she is employed, it is more informal than a formal setting. Even though the organization is a multimillion dollar corporation it is a family business so it is ran like a small company. For example the organization does expect its employees to work long hours and they do not pay them for it, this is partially stated in the employee handbook.
