Organizational Behavior Terminology and Concepts Paper
What is organizational behavior? According to chapter 1, “Organizational Behavior is the study of individuals and groups in organizations” (Schermerhorn & Osborn, 2008). OB (organizational behavior), as it is called in the chapter, is devoted to understanding individuals and group behavior. OB helps to develop a better work-related relationship for yourself and helps in understanding others in the workplace. This paper will discuss key concepts and terminology of organizational culture and behavior, as well as its diversity and communication.
Organizational culture is a set of operating principles that determine how people behave within an organization at which they spend most of the time of their daily lives. In reading chapter 16, Organizational Culture and Development, external adaptation and internal integration are explained. “External adaptation deals with reaching goals: the tasks to be accomplished, the methods to be used to achieve those goals, and the methods of coping with success and failure” (Schermerhorn & Osborn, 2008). Individuals not only resolve the daily problems of working together, but also have to come up with solutions to how they can be successful at work. External adaptation in an organization is like a marriage— individuals have to have priorities and work together in order to achieve their goals. The goal is to help individuals, groups, and organizations to be more effective. “Internal integration deals with the creation of a collective identity and with ways of working and living together” (Schermerhorn & Osborn, 2008).
