Executive Summary
Restructuring
Recently, Johnson C. Smith University underwent major restructuring to the institution when the 14th president took over. His vision creates a new academic model that most of the faculty and staff are not in agreement with. The President’s first order of business eliminates the academic vice president’s role and incorporates a team of three academic deans. Each dean now has equal authority as a vice president. Although new and innovated ideas are occurring, some administrators, faculty and staff have taken employment elsewhere. Employees are leaving the institution because of change, but the students have embraced the transition. The community has also welcomed the new direction of the historically black college and university (HBCU).
Organizational Mission
“The mission of JCSU is to provide an outstanding education for a diverse group of talented and highly motivated students from various ethnic, socioeconomic, and geographical backgrounds” (Purpose/Mission Statement, 2010). Both the World Report and U.S. News Report have established Johnson C. Smith (JCSU) as the best private university in the South. The university’s structure has proven to be in agreement with the mission statement. The institution has become accepting not only African Americans students, but students from all races in great numbers. These students, under the reign of the new president, far surpass the academic level of current students.
Fiscal Policies Johnson C. Smith receives revenues through private donations, endowments, government financial aid, and finances provided by students. The departmental structure of the university allows each department to have a budget amount for the department to spend within a certain timeframe.
