ORGANISATIONAL ANALYSIS

1.0 INTRODUCTION

NACCO Materials Handling Group was founded in 1913 as the Cleveland and Western Coal Corporation, this was later re-named to North American Coal Corporation in 1925. NACCO Materials Handling Group was formed from the merging of Yale and Hyster, which resulted in the company becoming world leaders in the design and manufacturing of forklift trucks.

Yale formerly known as Yale & Towne Manufacturing in 1875 had progressed from Yale lock designs first sketched in 1844 to become leading producers of hand-powered and electric-drive hoists, this later expanded into battery and electric powered forklift truck production in 1920.

In Americas Pacific Northwest in Portland, Oregon, Hyster a logging company were producing winches and lifting machines in 1929. The products produced by NACCO Materials Handling Group today are marketed under the Yale and Hyster brand names. Below is a summarised chart of NACCO Industries Inc. worldwide structure.

2.0 PRODUCTS

NACCO Industries, Inc Headquarters employs over 1400 people world-wide through its four subsidiaries:

NORTH AMERICAN COAL CORPORATION:

•Mines and Markets fuel for power generation by electric utilities. •Have coal reserves of 2.1 billion ton.
•Leader in production of lignite in US market.
•Have operations in North Dakota, Louisiana, Florida, Mississippi and Texas.

HAMILTON BEACH/PROCTER SILEX

•Selected by worlds largest retailer WalT Mart to help produce a new range of electric-branded kitchen appliances to be sold only at WalT Mart.

THE KITCHEN COLLECTION

•National speciality retailer.
•150 stores across USA.
•Specialises in kitchen ware, small electrical appliances and other accessories.

NACCO MATERIALS HANDLING GROUP

•NMHG, world leader in design and manufacture of forklift trucks. •Most well-know brands in the market HYSTER and YALE.
•Designs, engineers, manufacture and distribute a full range of forklift trucks and replacement parts globally.

Appendix 1 shows the geographical distribution of NMHG and the divisional headquarters, as you can see from the appendix NMHG has an impressive presence throughout Europe, America and in Asia-Pacific, specifying each individual locations function. My industrial placement is located in the European Headquarters, Irvine, Scotland.

3.0 IRVINE PLANT

Originally located in Hillington, Scotland and called "Hyster" the plant facilities were relocated to Irvine in 1960. In 1978 a new production line was introduced "SPED" Special Product Engineering Development, this allowed specialised trucks to be built for customers, this was a huge advantage for the customer allowing them to specify any special requirements they needed on their forklift truck and giving NMHG a competitive advantage within their market.
